- You are 18 years or older
- You are scheduled to have carotid endarterectomy (surgery to clear a blocked neck artery)
- You can have the surgery while awake using a numbing block in your neck
- You agree to have monitors placed on your head to measure oxygen levels in your brain
- You have not had the same surgery or a stent in the same artery before
- You have not had a major stroke with lasting weakness or a heart attack in the last 3 months
