This study looks for early warning signs (biomarkers) of muscle weakness that can happen in children who need a breathing machine for more than a few days. If your child is in the PICU on a ventilator for at least 3 days, this team may be able to test for clues that help prevent or manage this weakness.

Who can take part
- Child must be between 28 days and 18 years old.
- Child must be in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and on a breathing machine (ventilator).
- Child must need the breathing machine for more than 3 days.
- Child must not have certain brain or nerve conditions that affect breathing (like brain injury, stroke, tumors, Guillain-Barré, etc.).
- Child must not have a recent arm or leg surgery or fracture that keeps them from moving that limb.
