Who can take part
- You are scheduled for elective heart surgery through a cut down the middle of your chest (median sternotomy).
- Your surgery will use a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
- You are having one of these specific procedures: aortic valve replacement for aortic regurgitation, mitral valve repair or replacement, or certain types of aortic root or ascending aorta repair.
- Your heart's pumping strength (ejection fraction) is 60% or higher.
- You do not have severe thickening of the heart muscle (left ventricular hypertrophy), severe aortic stenosis, or hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
- You are not having more than one heart procedure at the same time (no combined surgeries, like valve plus bypass).
