Who can take part

  • You must be having general anesthesia with an arterial line (a small tube in an artery) and the muscle relaxant rocuronium at a participating hospital.
  • Your surgery or procedure must be expected to last at least 1.5 hours.
  • You cannot have any condition that makes rocuronium unsafe for you, such as a muscle or nerve disorder.
  • You cannot have certain health problems including kidney failure, chronic liver disease, epilepsy, or atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat).
  • You must be able to consent for yourself and not need an interpreter for hospital communication.
  • You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking lithium or the antibiotic gentamicin before your procedure.
