Who can take part

  • You must have atrial fibrillation or flutter that needs long-term blood thinners (anticoagulation).
  • Your CHA2DS2-VA score (a stroke risk calculator) must be at least 2—or 3 or more, or a score of 2 with extra risk factors.
  • If you take warfarin or another vitamin K antagonist (like Coumadin), your INR blood test result must be below 2.5 at the time of joining.
  • You cannot have a mechanical heart valve (but transcatheter aortic valve replacement is okay).
  • You cannot have moderate to severe mitral stenosis (a narrowed heart valve).
  • You cannot have had a stroke within 2 days before randomization, kidney function below a certain level (eGFR < 15), or a recent brain bleed.
