Internal radiation before prostate surgery for high-risk cancer

Prostate Cancer (Adenocarcinoma)

This trial tests a treatment approach for newly diagnosed, high-risk prostate cancer. You would receive a short course of internal radiation (high-dose-rate brachytherapy) before surgery to remove your prostate. The goal is to see if this combination is safe and works better than surgery alone.

Who can take part

  • You must have a new diagnosis of prostate cancer confirmed by biopsy.
  • Your cancer must be high-risk, which means you have at least one of these: PSA of 20 or more, aggressive cancer (Gleason 8 or higher), or the cancer has spread outside the prostate (stage T3a or higher).
  • Imaging scans (bone scan, CT, or PSMA-PET) must show the cancer has not spread to bones or lymph nodes.
  • You have not had hormone therapy (androgen deprivation therapy) for prostate cancer in the last 6 months.
  • You are 40 or older and healthy enough to undergo surgery and a type of internal radiation called brachytherapy (as determined by your doctor).
  • You have no other cancer in the past 3 years (except some skin cancers or very early bladder/neck cancers).
