Parkinson's and RBD diagnosis via colon biopsy
Part of Brain & nervous system clinical trials.
This trial uses a small piece of colon tissue, taken during a routine colonoscopy, to look for a protein linked to Parkinson's disease and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). It aims to improve diagnosis for these conditions.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You are between 40 and 99 years old
- You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD)
- You are scheduled for a routine colonoscopy for cancer screening or other reasons
- You are not taking blood thinners (except Plavix or aspirin alone)
- You do not have active colon cancer or recent abdominal surgery
- You are not pregnant or planning pregnancy before the colonoscopy

This trial studies nerve cell “biomarkers” from the gut to learn whether they can help detect Parkinson’s disease (or related conditions) earlier. You may be asked to undergo a colonoscopy to collect gut tissue for testing.
This study looks at how your gut's immune system relates to brain and nerve diseases. Researchers will collect samples during a colonoscopy to better understand connections between gut health and neurologic conditions like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.
This study tests whether a protein in colon tissue can help diagnose Parkinson's disease. People with Parkinson's who already need a routine colonoscopy may participate.
This study collects blood and related samples to create a “biobank” and uses lab tests to study genetic risk in Parkinson’s disease and idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). It may help researchers understand why symptoms develop and improve future prevention or treatment approaches.
This study looks at people with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), confirmed by a sleep test, who may be in the early “prodromal” stage before Parkinson’s or related diseases. It also enrolls healthy controls to compare results from brain and body testing to better understand who is at risk.
This study tests whether taking probiotics can improve REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in people with Parkinson's disease. You will receive either a probiotic supplement or a placebo, and researchers will use brain scans to see how it affects your symptoms.
