This trial tests if the medication valproate (a seizure drug) can improve vision in children and teens aged 8-17 who still have a lazy eye (amblyopia) even after wearing glasses or patching. It may help if your child's vision has stopped getting better with standard treatments.

Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 8 and 17 years old.
  • They have a lazy eye caused by eyes turning in/out (strabismus) or a big difference in prescription between eyes (anisometropia).
  • The weaker eye sees between 20/40 and 20/400, and the stronger eye sees at least 20/25.
  • Their vision has not improved with at least 8 weeks of patching or glasses alone.
  • Your child cannot have certain health issues like liver, kidney, or metabolic problems, or be on medications that interact with valproate.
  • Girls who have started their period must use effective birth control during the study.
