- You are 18 years old or older
- You have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube inserted through your neck) and are using a breathing machine
- You are alert and able to participate in breathing exercises
- You or your legal representative have given permission to join the study
- You do not have facial or skull fractures, or a bleeding problem that could make placing a small tube in your esophagus unsafe
- You do not have an untreated air leak in your chest or lung that could be dangerous
