Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be in the intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48–72 hours.
  • Your blood pressure should be stable, either on its own or with medications.
  • Your oxygen levels should be adequate (specific settings on the ventilator).
  • You must be able to follow instructions or not be deeply sedated.
