Who can take part
- You must be in one of the participating ICUs.
- Your doctor has decided you need treatment to remove extra fluid, either with medicine or a blood-filtering machine.
- This is the first time during this ICU stay that you are having this treatment.
- You are 18 years or older.
- You do not have certain serious heart conditions (like major heart shunts or moderate to severe aortic regurgitation).
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or less.
- A bedside ultrasound of the lungs (POCUS) must be possible and reliable, so you cannot have certain pre-existing lung diseases.
- A test called passive leg raising (which checks how your heart responds to fluid) must be possible (so you cannot be on ECMO, a heart-lung bypass machine).
- You were not transferred from another ICU and have not been in this study before.
- You are not near the end of life or choosing to opt out.
