This study tests two medications, dexmedetomidine and midazolam, to see which works better at preventing shivering in trauma patients having leg surgery under spinal anesthesia. If you are scheduled for this type of surgery, you may be eligible to join.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 60 years old.
  • You have suffered an injury (trauma) and need orthopedic surgery on your leg or foot.
  • You will receive spinal anesthesia (numbing from the waist down) and a tourniquet on your leg during surgery.
  • Your health is generally good (classified as ASA I or II).
  • You do NOT have a very slow heart rate, heart block, uncontrolled low blood pressure, or a fever.
  • You are not allergic to the study drugs (dexmedetomidine or midazolam), and you do not have severe liver, kidney, or psychiatric problems, or regularly take sedatives.
