Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your surgery requires general anesthesia lasting more than 2 hours
  • You will have an arterial line to continuously measure blood pressure
  • Your doctor plans to keep your mean blood pressure at 65 mmHg or higher during surgery
  • Your overall health before surgery is rated as ASA 4 or less (a standard anesthesia risk score)
  • You do not have severe low blood pressure before surgery, severe heart failure, or need emergency surgery
