Who can take part

  • You must be on a breathing tube and have moderate to severe ARDS (a lung condition where oxygen levels are very low).
  • Your doctor has already decided you need a ventilator that allows you to breathe on your own sometimes (assisted ventilation).
  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You cannot be pregnant.
  • You must not have a pacemaker, implantable defibrillator, or other devices that prevent using a special monitoring belt (electrical impedance tomography or EIT).
  • You cannot have surgical wounds or dressings that block placing the EIT belt on your chest.
  • You must be able to have a feeding tube placed through your nose (no recent stomach surgery or esophageal varices).
