Who can take part

  • Your child is between 6 months and 6 years old.
  • Your child is in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit after heart surgery.
  • Your child has one of these heart conditions: ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, or tetralogy of Fallot.
  • Your child had surgery through the middle of the chest with a heart-lung machine.
  • Your child received the antibiotic cefazolin during surgery.
  • Your child is covered by social security, and both parents or legal guardians have signed the consent form.
  • Your child has not had heart surgery before, does not have bleeding problems or a weak immune system, and is not in another research study.
