Who can take part

  • You have had a lung or heart transplant, or you are definitely waiting for one.
  • You are fully committed to receiving all life-support treatments.
  • Your doctor agrees to the study's breathing tube settings and muscle relaxants.
  • You have been on ECMO (a heart-lung machine) for 72 hours or less.
  • You do not have certain stomach or esophagus problems (like bleeding varices or recent surgery) that would prevent a special breathing tube.
  • You are not pregnant or in prison.
