Who can take part

  • You must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • This must be the first time you are being tested for readiness to breathe on your own (spontaneous breathing trial).
  • Your doctor must have already decided you are ready to start weaning from the ventilator, based on standard medical guidelines.
  • You cannot be pregnant.
  • You cannot have a preexisting diaphragm problem or injury.
  • You cannot have a tracheostomy tube in place.
