Who can take part

  • You or your loved one is on a breathing machine (ventilator) in the intensive care unit and doctors are starting to try removing it.
  • You do not have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube placed through a hole in the neck).
  • You are not currently enrolled in any other research study.
  • You do not have a device implanted to help the diaphragm (the main breathing muscle) work.
  • You are not pregnant.
  • You have a legal guardian or family member who can give permission for the study.
