Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and are scheduled for a stent procedure for chest pain or after a heart attack with improving heart enzyme levels.
  • The calcium in your artery must be severe and visible on two different x-ray views, or you must have a hard calcium lump sticking out from the artery wall.
  • Your artery must be between 2.5 and 4.0 mm wide, the blockage must be 40 mm or shorter, and the calcium must be within 0.5 mm of the inner surface of the artery.
  • Your heart's pumping ability must be at least 25%, and you must not have severe kidney problems or be on dialysis.
  • You cannot have a pacemaker, a clot in the treated artery, an aneurysm nearby, or a chronically totally blocked artery.
  • You must be able to take blood thinners for at least 6 months.
