Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older
- You are going to have your entire thyroid gland removed (or the remaining part removed after a prior surgery)
- Your blood calcium level is normal before the surgery (as checked by your doctor)
- You are not currently taking calcium or vitamin D supplements before surgery
- You do not have a known vitamin D deficiency (level below 30 nmol/L)
- You do not have untreated overactive parathyroid glands, a non-surgical parathyroid condition, or advanced kidney disease
