Heliox and breathing control during exercise

This trial tests whether a special gas mixture called heliox (helium and oxygen) can help control breathing during exercise. It is for healthy, active adults age 18–40 who exercise regularly and have no major health problems.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 40 years old.
  • You speak and read English.
  • You do high-intensity exercise for at least 2 hours each week, and have been doing this for the past 2 years.
  • You have normal lung function and normal cognitive function.
  • You do not smoke, have no major health conditions (like heart, lung, or kidney disease), and are not taking certain medications (like antidepressants, stimulants, or pain relievers).
  • If you are a woman, you have a regular monthly period (every 21–35 days) and are not using birth control to stop your period.
