Who can take part

  • You are 78 years of age or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib) by an ECG.
  • Your AFib may come and go (paroxysmal), be constant (persistent), or have been constant for a long time (longstanding persistent).
  • Your doctor believes you are a good candidate for the ablation procedure based on heart guidelines.
  • You have a low to moderate burden of other health conditions (measured by a score of 7 or less on a standard health index).
  • Your left atrium (upper heart chamber) is not severely enlarged (less than 55 mm on an ultrasound in the past year).
  • You have not had a heart attack or heart bypass surgery in the last 12 weeks.
  • You do not have severe heart valve disease or congenital heart disease.
  • You have not had a prior ablation or AV-node ablation for AFib.
  • You are able and willing to take blood thinners (anticoagulants).

Extended ablation vs. standard treatment for persistent atrial fibrillation

This trial compares two catheter ablation techniques for people with persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat that doesn't go away on its own). It will test whether a more extensive ablation (burning more heart tissue) works better than the standard procedure of isolating the pulmonary veins (the veins that bring blood from the lungs to the heart). If you have this condition and have had at least one episode in the past year, this study might help you find a more effective treatment.
