  • Expected to need a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 2 days
  • Expected to be heavily sedated (not awake) during the study
  • Consent must be given by a family member or next-of-kin
  • Must be able to receive nutrition through a feeding tube (gastric tube)
  • Must have an arterial line (for blood pressure monitoring) and a venous line (for IV fluids)
