This trial tests if adding a bone-strengthening drug (bisphosphonate) to standard antibiotic treatment (vancomycin) works better for a certain type of long-term bone infection (osteomyelitis) that needs surgery. It may help people with a staph infection in their thigh or shin bone who are otherwise fairly healthy.

Who can take part

  • You have a long-term bone infection in your thigh or shin bone (doctors call this Cierny-Mader type I or III) and need surgery.
  • Your infection is caused by Staph bacteria (including MRSA) that can be treated with vancomycin.
  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You are not taking bone-strengthening drugs now and have not had an IV version in the last year.
  • Your kidneys are working well (creatinine below 177 μmol/L) and your calcium level is normal.
  • You do not have poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c under 8%) and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
