  • Born prematurely (before 37 weeks)
  • Has respiratory distress syndrome (trouble breathing after birth)
  • Admitted to the NICU within 24 hours of birth
  • No known bowel or digestive tract birth defects
  • No confirmed or suspected infection (sepsis) at the time of enrollment
  • Expected to survive more than 48 hours according to the doctor
