This trial studies whether an oral medicine called L-citrulline (L-cit) is safe and how it works in very preterm infants. It includes two groups: babies with chronic lung disease (with or without high blood pressure in the lungs) and babies recovering from severe bowel infection (NEC).

Who can take part
- Born at or before 30 weeks of pregnancy (very preterm)
- Be at least 32 weeks after birth (post-menstrual age) for the lung-disease group
- If in the lung-disease group: be on breathing support with certain levels of help for most of the day
- If in the NEC group: have had surgery for Stage IIIb NEC and be tolerating full-ish tube feeds (about 50 mL per kg per day)
- Not have major heart or lung vein narrowing problems (small common holes may be allowed)
- Not currently have serious unstable infection (sepsis) or be expected to die within 7 days
