Who can take part

  • You must be 22 years or older.
  • You must be in the ICU and on a breathing machine (ventilator).
  • Your doctors must think you’re ready to try breathing on your own, based on certain oxygen, breathing rate, and blood pressure checks.
  • You need to be awake enough to follow simple commands (Glasgow Coma Scale over 10) and have a strong cough.
  • You cannot have a recent brain injury or be heavily sedated.
