Sauna therapy for heart failure symptoms

Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You have heart failure with an ejection fraction under 50% (confirmed by an echo within the past year).
  • You have symptoms like shortness of breath or fatigue with moderate activity (NYHA class II or III).
  • You take at least 40 mg of furosemide (or an equivalent water pill) daily for at least 30 days.
  • Your NT-proBNP is over 400 pg/ml or your BNP is over 100 pg/ml.
  • Your resting blood pressure is 100 mmHg or higher.
  • Your kidney function (eGFR) is 20 ml/min/1.73 m² or higher.
  • You are scheduled for a hospital-based cardiac rehab program that lasts at least 3 weeks.
  • You have no conditions that would make sauna unsafe, like heat intolerance.
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or under any legal protection order.
