Who can take part
- At least 21 years old
- Diagnosed cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) confirmed by biopsy, imaging, blood work, or endoscopy
- History of hepatic encephalopathy—confusion or brain symptoms caused by liver disease
- Able to understand and sign consent forms and score above 25 on a brief memory test
- Stable on current medications for at least 4 weeks if taking them
- No dialysis, untreated gut cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or serious GI problems
