Who can take part

  • At least 21 years old
  • Diagnosed cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) confirmed by biopsy, imaging, blood work, or endoscopy
  • History of hepatic encephalopathy—confusion or brain symptoms caused by liver disease
  • Able to understand and sign consent forms and score above 25 on a brief memory test
  • Stable on current medications for at least 4 weeks if taking them
  • No dialysis, untreated gut cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or serious GI problems
