Who can take part
- You are having elective (planned) or emergency open-heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass)
- Your EuroSCORE II surgical risk score is 6% or higher (your doctor can tell you this number)
- You do not have a blood infection marker (procalcitonin) level of 2 ng/mL or higher
- You do not have severe liver disease or liver failure
- You are not on dialysis or have end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis
- You are not taking immunosuppressive drugs (like corticosteroids or chemotherapy agents) other than standard pre-surgery medications
