Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for elective (planned) foot or ankle surgery at Stanford Health
  • Your overall health allows for surgery (ASA status I–III, meaning you're in good to fair health with controlled conditions)
  • You do not take opioid pain medications or benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety drugs) regularly
  • You do not have a serious brain disorder, active psychosis, or psychiatric condition that would affect thinking tests
  • You do not have active implanted devices like pacemakers or brain stimulators
  • You can speak and understand English well enough to answer questions about your thinking and memory
