  • This is their first-time brain shunt (VP shunt) surgery—not a replacement of an existing shunt
  • Brain fluid buildup (hydrocephalus) is due to birth defects, bleeding, or inflammation—not cancer
  • Parent or legal guardian provides written permission for the child to participate
  • Child has no diabetes, kidney failure, or immune system disorders
  • Child does not have an active infection or fever at the time of surgery
