Who can take part

  • You had a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA) within the last 30 days with mild to moderate disability
  • You have a narrowed carotid artery (30–99% blockage) on the same side as your stroke
  • You are 18 years or older and mentally able to make medical decisions
  • Your doctors believe you are a good candidate for carotid artery treatment (surgery or stent)
  • You are willing to be randomly assigned to either the new IMPROVE method or standard care to decide your treatment
  • You have no heart rhythm problems that could cause blood clots, and your carotid narrowing is from plaque buildup (atherosclerosis), not other causes
