Who can take part
- Child weighs more than 5 kg (about 11 lbs)
- Child is at least 3 months old for cleft lip repair, or at least 9 months old for cleft palate repair
- Child is generally healthy with no serious medical conditions (ASA physical status I or II)
- Child's hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein in blood) is at least 100 g/L
- Child has not had a respiratory infection or vaccination within 2 weeks before surgery
- Child does not have acute illness at time of surgery
