Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are currently on a breathing tube (intubated) or have a tracheostomy (breathing tube in your neck)
  • Your medical team has decided to try a spontaneous breathing trial (a test to see if you can breathe without machine support)
  • You have not had neuromuscular blocking medications in the last 24 hours
  • You do not have a known or suspected injury to the nerves that control your diaphragm
  • You have no pre-existing neuromuscular disease (muscle or nerve disorder)
