Who can take part

  • You are between 20 and 50 years old
  • You are currently receiving ECMO support (a heart-lung machine) and have been on it for at least 72 hours
  • Your heart is stable enough that your medical team approves you for physical therapy and electrical stimulation
  • You do not have unstable heart rhythms, severe bleeding, or blood clots
  • You have no open wounds, severe burns, or skin damage where electrodes would be placed on your legs
  • You are not pregnant and are not receiving an IABP pump (another heart support device)
