Nerve Block for Pain Relief During Knee Replacement

Who can take part

  • You have moderate-to-severe knee arthritis (grades II–IV) and are scheduled for primary total knee replacement surgery
  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You are in generally good health (ASA grade I–III, meaning no serious heart, lung, or organ problems that would make surgery very risky)
  • You can receive spinal anesthesia (numbing injection in the lower back) during surgery
  • You have not taken prescription opioid pain medications regularly (more than 3 months) before surgery
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or allergy to local anesthetics
