New jaw-surgery technique for severe sleep apnea

This study compares two surgical approaches to treating moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)—a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. The surgery moves the lower and upper jaw forward to open the airway. Researchers want to see if a newer technique without splints (wires holding the jaw in place) works as well as the traditional method with splints.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have moderate-to-severe sleep apnea confirmed by an overnight sleep study (AHI score of 15 or higher)
  • You've tried or couldn't tolerate CPAP (the mask-and-machine treatment for sleep apnea)
  • You are in generally good health and able to have surgery
  • Your doctor believes jaw-advancement surgery is the right treatment for you
  • You have no history of previous jaw or facial bone surgery
