Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are having elective spine surgery (such as laminectomy, fusion, or disc replacement) under general anesthesia
  • Your surgery is expected to last at least 1.5 hours from start to finish
  • You do not have a regular heart rhythm or recent severe heart rhythm problems in the past year
  • You are not pregnant, nursing, or using IV drugs
  • You have not used methadone or certain psychiatric medications in the past 90 days
