  • You are having planned (not emergency) heart surgery that will use a heart-lung machine for a longer time
  • You are 65 years old or older
  • You have at least one risk factor for developing breathing problems after surgery
  • You do not have a pacemaker or implanted heart defibrillator device
  • You do not have serious active lung disease, recent pneumonia, or severe heart failure
  • You are willing to give informed consent and participate
