Who can take part
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)—a serious lung condition requiring a breathing machine
- You are sedated (asleep with medication) and receiving paralysis medication to stay still on the breathing machine
- You do not have an ECMO machine (a heart-lung bypass device)
- You have not had chest trauma or injury in the last 3 months
- You are not in uncontrolled shock requiring very high doses of blood-pressure medication
