Adaptive deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease

This study tests a new type of deep brain stimulation (DBS)—a surgical treatment that uses electrical pulses to help control Parkinson's symptoms. Unlike standard DBS, this system adapts automatically to your body's needs. You may qualify if you've never had DBS surgery or if you've had it before and are willing to switch to the new device.

Who can take part

  • You have idiopathic Parkinson's disease (the most common type, not caused by another condition)
  • Your Parkinson's symptoms are moderate to advanced (Hoehn & Yahr stage 2.5–4) even when you're not taking medication
  • Either: you've never had DBS surgery and are a good candidate for it, OR you've had bilateral DBS surgery before and respond well to it
  • You can attend all study visits and complete daily diaries about your symptoms for at least 3 consecutive days
  • You do not have depression, cognitive decline, or other medical conditions that would make DBS risky or unsafe
  • You are not pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding during the study
