- You are 18 years or older
- You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) with acute respiratory distress syndrome (a severe lung condition)
- You are on a breathing machine and deeply sedated so the machine controls your breaths
- You or your family member know about the study and agree to take part
- You do not have any condition that makes it unsafe to briefly increase pressure in your lungs
