Detecting early shoulder blade problems in ankylosing spondylitis

This study uses ultrasound to look for early signs of shoulder blade (scapular) movement issues in people with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a type of arthritis that affects the spine. It also includes people without AS who have activity-related discomfort to compare results.

Who can take part

  • You have ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and have never been treated for it
  • Or, you do not have AS but feel discomfort when you are active
  • No recent injury or surgery to the shoulder area
  • No nerve or muscle problems that affect movement
  • No long-term lung disease or other autoimmune/rheumatic conditions
