Who can take part
- You must be at least 18 years old and scheduled for heart surgery (like bypass or valve repair) that uses a heart-lung machine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
- You need to have a higher-than-average risk of developing kidney problems after surgery, as determined by a scoring tool.
- You must not have had any sudden kidney damage in the week before surgery.
- You cannot have severe chronic kidney disease (with very low kidney function) or be on long-term dialysis.
