Who can take part
- Adults with chronic kidney disease, including a urine protein level of 30 mg/g or higher and an estimated kidney function (eGFR) of 20 or more (units will be checked)
- Must be on a stable, maximally tolerated dose of an ACE inhibitor or ARB (kidney protective blood pressure medicines) for at least 4 weeks before screening
- Body mass index (BMI) of 23 or higher
- No history of type 1 diabetes
- Recent blood sugar (HbA1c) less than 10%
- No active treatment for diabetic eye disease (retinopathy or macular edema)
- No more than one severe low blood sugar event in the last 6 months and no unawareness of low blood sugar
- No heart attack, stroke, or major heart procedure in the last 3 months
- No significant stomach or intestinal condition, and not taking medicines that affect stomach emptying
- No history of pancreatitis or certain types of thyroid cancer (medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2)
- Not currently participating in another clinical trial
