Waking up right after heart surgery versus later in the ICU

This study tests whether it is safe and better to wake up and breathe on your own while still in the operating room after heart surgery, instead of being kept asleep on a breathing machine in the ICU. If you qualify, this could lead to a faster recovery.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and scheduled for elective heart surgery using a heart-lung machine.
  • Your surgery is expected to be low-risk (your doctor will calculate this).
  • Your heart surgeon agrees that you are a good candidate for waking up and breathing on your own right in the operating room.
  • You do not use home oxygen, have certain lung or heart conditions, or have significant sleep apnea that requires a CPAP/BiPAP.
  • You do not have certain muscle or nerve diseases that affect breathing, and you have no major airway abnormalities.
  • You are not having a transplant, a pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, or needing a mechanical heart pump (like LVAD or ECMO).
