Auditory nerve implant for deaf adults who cannot use cochlear implants

This study is testing a new way to use an inner ear implant (called an auditory nerve implant, or ANI) to help people who are deaf in both ears and cannot use a cochlear implant. The researchers want to see how well people perceive sounds with this device.

Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 85 years old.
- You are deaf in both ears and cannot get or benefit from a cochlear implant (for example, due to inner ear bone changes or poor cochlear implant performance).
- You are eligible for an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) surgery.
- You have a functional auditory nerve and central auditory pathway.
- Your severe-to-profound hearing loss started after you learned to speak (post-linguistic onset).
- The balance function in your ear opposite the treatment side is normal.
- If you are a woman, you are not pregnant and cannot become pregnant (or have had sterilization or are past menopause).
- You do not have medical conditions that make surgery unsafe (such as severe depression, recent heart attack, stroke, dementia, or epilepsy).
- You do not have allergies to the implant materials (silicone, Parylene-C, Iridium oxide, Platinum-Iridium).
- You do not have other implanted electronic devices that could interfere with the auditory implant.
- You do not have skull abnormalities that would prevent placing the implant device.
