Who can take part
- You must be between 18 and 75 years old
- You must be on a breathing machine (ventilator) with a tube in your windpipe, started less than 24 hours ago
- Your oxygen level in the blood must be very low despite the machine's support (PaO2/FiO2 ratio 200 or less, or SpO2/FiO2 235 or less with SpO2 97% or less)
- Your chest X-ray or CT scan must show fluid or shadowing in both lungs not explained by other causes like heart failure or fluid overload
- Your doctors expect you will need the breathing machine for at least 3 more days after joining the study
