Who can take part
- You have depression that has not improved after at least 2 standard antidepressant medicines taken long enough
- Your depression severity score (MADRS) is above 20, and ECT is planned
- You can understand the study and sign informed consent
- Your overall health status is not too high-risk for anesthesia (ASA score must be under 4)
- You do not have certain heart, lung, stroke/brain blood vessel, pressure-in-brain/eye, or seizure-related problems that would make ECT unsafe
- You do not have a device with electronic parts inside your body (like a pacemaker or deep brain stimulator), and you are not allergic to study drugs
